WHY SUCH A HOOPLA OVER A POORLY WRITTEN ARTICLE IN ‘THE ECONOMIST’?

Image
Mukesh Devrari    On January 23, 2020 The Economist ran a story titled ‘Narendra Modi stokes division in the world’s biggest democracy’. First, it must be remembered that ‘The Economist’ is a British magazine. It has no role to play in the making of India. There is no reason for Indians to be overjoyed when it praises their country, neither they should feel despair at criticism.  It is basically a white man’s take on world affairs. Secondly, it is also important to note that the whole world watches India with keen interest. Almost 20 per cent of the world’s population live in South Asia. The world has a stake in the economic progress of the region if India will be focusing more on the issues other than the economy, the world community is likely to question the country.  Unfortunately, over the last six years, India is in news for wrong reasons. IMF has forecasted that the growth rate this year likely to remain less than five per cent. Just a decade ear...

TERRIBLE SITUATION OF CONTRACT ASSISTANT PROFESSORS IN HIGHER EDUCATION

Image
Mukesh Devrari Universities in India appoint Assistant Professors in four categories. However, the categories are not defined by UGC itself. They have been created in the policy gaps of UGC regulations over the years. First, universities appoint permanent Assistant Professors, who have a job for life. Second, universities appoint Assistant Professors on full salary as fixed by the government but on a yearly contract basis. Thirdly, universities also appoint Assistant Professors on a fixed salary of 35000 or 25000 per month on yearly contracts. It is discretionary for universities. Fourthly, Universities also appoint Assistant Professors on per class basis with a ceiling of 25000 per month. Some universities pay 500 rupees per class, others pay 1000 rupees. DAV PG College in Dehradun pays 300 rupees per class to the faculty members of all self-finance departments. Minimum qualification for the post of Assistant Professors as per UGC regulations is UGC - NET or PhD degree. ...

ORDINARY PEOPLE MUST OPPOSE SYRIAN WAR

Image
Mukesh Devrari Mainstream media in America is preparing the ground for impeachment of President Donald Trump. It seems deep state has taken hold of American policies. Any president who will attempt to disturb the status quo will have a difficult time in the white house.  Trump offered hope to many during the election campaign. His supporters believed that America would do away with the futile wars in the Middle East and elsewhere. It will focus more on improving the internal situation, rather than policing the world with its dubious standards. Just days ago, the US launched 59 Tom Hawk missiles on a Syrian airbase after the chemical attack on rebel-held areas. UN said, “It cannot verify that attacks were made by Syrian Regime without a proper enquiry.” Russians and Iranians opposed the unilateral strike by the US before proper investigation. After the attack renowned US foreign policy expert Fareed Zakaria said, “Now, the Donald Trump has become the US President”. H...

HOW TO FILE A COMPLAINT IN NHRC?

Image
Mukesh Devrari  Many commissions have been established in India, but common masses are not aware of how to file a complaint in commissions. Here is a tentative format developed by professional human rights activists. It is not necessary to write in this particular format but if justice is not delivered through the commission, it will help the complainant to take the issue convincingly to the courts.  Format of Application to Commissions -          If a complaint application goes through an organization, it carries more weight. Use official letterhead of any NGO to file an application. -          Mention the date of complaint. To, Address of the Commission Subject  – States Name + District + Village + Block + Police Station + Issue ( Police Atrocity/Caste Atrocity/Domestic Violence/Child Abuse) Sir/Madam, First Para – Who are you? In 3-4 lines yo...

PERSPECTIVES ON KASHMIR VIOLENCE

Image
Source - Wikipedia Mukesh Devrari There are allegations that Indian armed forces rape women in Kashmir. Indian armed forces kill young men and women in Kashmir. The Indian state is a monster full of rage and hatred and hell-bent on destroying the lives of ordinary Kashmiris. People in Kashmir face humiliation on a daily basis.  There are hundreds of Kashmiri parents searching their lost kids who are picked and killed by Indian army in fake encounters over the years. This is a popular perspective on Kashmir nowadays. Newspapers sympathetic to separatist tendencies in Kashmir are full of these stories. In light of these facts all of us need to ask one question?  Why India deployed thousands of armed forces in civilian areas in Kashmir. No matter how over simplistic this may sound, but India deployed armed forces in civilian areas to counter terrorists.  Now it has become a chain. No one is willing to go at the root cause of the situation. For some, the root c...

STRUGGLE FOR GENDER EQUALITY CONTINUES IN INDIA

Image
Mukesh Devrari How the feminists should fight for gender equality in India is an elusive question? What should they demand is a settled narrative?  At the first level, feminists should fight to reform the law. It must be based on rationality. It must not be discriminatory and biased. At least women in India are fortunate that the moral conscience keepers of our society were always sympathetic to the concerns of feminists. Immediately after the independence first Prime Minister of India decided to amend the Hindu Code Bill on the modern lines despite the opposition from Hindu fanatics within Congress party. He successfully dealt with fundamentalism of the majority community but decided to bow its head in front of fanatics within the Muslim minority. Perhaps that’s why uniform civil code could not be implemented in India. Feminists in India must ask for the changes in laws that are gender biased and discriminatory. That is the first battleground. At the second level,...
